Information On Mozambique Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, arrived in Mozambique's oldest town Inhambane in 1498. Centuries of Portuguese colonization has clearly influenced the Mozambique cuisines. The native maize plant was introduced to Mozambique by the crops grown by the Portuguese in South America. Drought resistant crops like Millet and sorghum are mostly grown by Mozambicans. Colonial rule was established in Mozambique by Portugal in 1919, but Mozambique eventually became an independent country once more after national liberation on the 25th of June 1975 and has awakened after decades of isolation as a very popular tourist destination. With Mozambique being a former Portuguese colony being able to speak Portuguese is a big plus when visiting the country. Maputo is the capital city and a major port with Beira and Nacala being just as important ports in Mozambique. Portuguese is the official language used in Mozambique with English widely being used in business. Mozambique is in South-East Africa and is bordered by South Africa, Malawi, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Zambia. All foreign citizens must have a valid passport and a visa to be able to enter the country, which can be obtained either from the airport, at the border post or the nearby Mozambique embassies and consulates in your country. South African passport holders do not need a visa to enter Mozambique, but should make sure that their passport is valid for another six months after returning from Mozambique. The best times to visit are between May and November, the weather is tropical to subtropical with the rainy season between November and March. The worst weather conditions include drought and floods. If at all possible, do avoid the height of the rains between February to April, many roads become unusable. Flooding is a common site in the south and centre of Mozambique.
